Data Return
Data Return is betting its business on the Windows® 2000 Server operating system. Its customers purchase high-end Internet, intranet, and extranet hosting solutions, and expect no less than the utmost in reliability and performance. With customers all over the world running mission-critical commercial applications, Data Return’s servers must deliver extreme reliability, scalable performance, and easy remote management.

Company Profile

Data Return delivers high-availability Internet, intranet, and extranet hosting services using Microsoft solutions on more than 500 Compaq ProLiant servers. Founded in 1996, the Dallas-based company serves customers all over the world, ranging from the Web 1000 to the Fortune 1000.

Performance Increased by 40 Percent

Data Return demonstrated Windows 2000 Server performance by running a mixed-operating-system clustered environment on identical hardware. "In virtually all respects, Windows 2000 has consistently outperformed Microsoft Windows NT 4.0," says Sunny Vanderbeck, Chairman and CEO of Data Return.

Windows 2000 Advanced Server also provides increased scalability for Data Return’s customers who use Microsoft SQL ServerTM 7.0. With support for more than four processors and a larger addressable memory space, Data Return can offer its customers more scalable solutions for databases and other processor-intensive applications.

The company is especially pleased by the combination of Windows 2000 with Compaq’s eight-way ProLiant servers, which provide a whole new level of server scalability. "Windows 2000 running on an eight-way ProLiant server provides our customers with peace of mind—their applications will be able to handle ever-increasing end user demand." says Lochhead.

Increased Reliability Compared to Windows NT
Vanderbeck attributes this increased reliability partly to big improvements in Internet Information Services (IIS) 5.0. Support staff and system administrators are experiencing fewer server alerts and customer applications are running more reliably. Plus, customers on the same server platform can handle many more e-commerce transactions, and therefore support greater numbers of end users.

Data Return is using its expertise in application clustering to upgrade customers to Windows 2000. Through the use of fault-tolerant switching hardware, Data Return customers have the capability to run their applications in a mixed operating system environment and still maintain the reliability required for their production applications.

Terminal Server Integrated for Simplified Remote Management

While a third party product was needed for terminal-server services on Windows NT 4.0, they are now included in the Windows 2000 platform. This is especially important for Data Return, whose business is based on a remote server management model. The company provides services internationally with data centers in Texas, California, Washington DC, New York, and London.

Increased uptime. Scalability. Improved remote server management. Windows 2000 is a next generation operating system for a new generation of companies.
